Ireland first applied to join what was then called the European Economic Community on the 31st of July 1961, but was unsuccessful. A second application in 1967 had been blocked again but in 1969 it was agreed to start negotiations to join. A referendum held in May 1972 confirmed Ireland's entry and on the 1st of January in 1973 Ireland joined.
