There is sociological evidence that thousands of years ago, mind-altering substances (herbs, certain plants) were used in rituals or religious ceremonies in a number of cultures. but it is doubtful that such things were referred to as "drugs" at that time. As for alcohol, wine was a very common drink thousands of years ago; in middle-eastern cultures, for example, it was used for rituals as well as to show hospitality. However, even in The Bible, there were warnings not to over-use it; being drunk was condemned in a number of verses.

∙ 13y agoMost Drugs started back in ancient times. They were used for medicinal purposes. However, some guy eventually took too much and got addicted and started telling other people to over dose because it felt good.

∙ 14y agoDrug abuse has been seen as long as history existed. In China the oppium was smoked in pipes. In the Middle East, the Bilble historical accounts speak about the use of alchool wich is also a drug. In the new world, the coca plant has been used as an herbal remedy for altitude sickness as long as people have been living there, the extraction of cocaine from the coca leaves made this en epidemic since the late 1800's when you were able to obtain it in soda pops in any drug store.

∙ 14y agoyour question is confusing, if you mean when did humans start using drugs, the answer is hard to trace. Humans have been using drugs since our existence. Early civilizations certainly had alcohol, but the Mayans had cocaine, Aztecs had salvia, Native Americans had Peyote. We learned how to use drugs by watching certain animals such as elephants, that also consume drugs. If you mean when did the war on drugs begin, that was basically only in this century.
