North America and South America are continents. When someone says "America" all on its own, they usually are speaking of the country the United States of America; it is often called, the US, USA, or simply just America for short.

It depends on who you ask. Most people from English speaking countries say America in reference to the country the United States of America. People from other languages in Latin America and in parts of Southern and Eastern Europe will say America in reference of a continent or what some people call the Americas in reference to North America and South America as two continents.
