I have been unable to find any evidence that Barack Obama ever used the name Barry Soetoro other than unsourced references at partisan right wing web sites and provably false chain emails.

The idea that Obama used the name Soetoro seems to come from two hoax emails.

The first was a chain mail that claimed Obama entered Pakistan in 1981 at a time when there was a US ban on travel to Pakistan. The theory goes, Obama must have used an Indonesian passport to enter the country, thus he must have been an Indonesian citizen, naturalized as Soetoro.

This theory is based on the entirely false premise that there was a travel ban to Pakistan in 1981. No such ban existed. Obama visited Pakistan with a friend as a student in the US, while he held a US Passport (which, btw, required a valid birth certificate to claim)

The second is the claim that Obama enrolled in Occidental College on a Fullbright scholarship as a foreign student. The theory goes, he must have used Indonesian credentials. In a rare twist, this theory apparently accepts that he wasn't a dual citizen in Kenya (the Kenyan Constitution explicitly bars dual citizenship).

This claim is also fraudulent. 1) Occidental College has stated the Obama used the name Barak Obama while at Occidental. 2) Obama's scholarship at Occidental was NOT a Fullbright scholarship, and Fullbrights are usually granted to Master's and PhD students, not undergrads (as Obama was at the time).

No, it is not, and it never has been. This is another of those internet myths. Barack Obama's mom did in fact remarry, and his step-dad was Lolo Soetoro. But Mr. Soetoro never adopted young Barack, nor did Barack take his name. And while in high school he was sometimes called Barry, he always used the last name of his biological father, Barack Obama Senior.
