Best Answer

no carbon dioxide is not an polar molecule.

it has a linear structure, so the electronegativity does not matter in the case of CO2.

----

It is because it forms a double bonding between the cole-atom, and the oxygen-atoms that looks like this: O=C=O . This way, the electron negativity that Oxygen has does not affect the structure of the molecule because they stabilize each other, thus forming a negative-charged centrum in the middle of the molecule.

As a side-note, water, H2O, which is a polar molecule, has the structure of an upside-down turned V, with Oxygen at the tip, and hydrogen at the bases of the v. This structure enables the negative charge to not occur within the middle of the molecule, placing the negative centra somewhere between the two "feet" of the V, thus forming this V-shaped molecule that leads electricity.

yes, Because the difference in electronegativiti is less than 1.7 !

C=2.5

O=3.5 !

Diff=3.5-2.5=1 !

oxygen is more electronegative than c

so oxygen is negatively charged and c is postively charged !

It's non polar because it's symmetrical with a linear shape (no nonbonding domains, two bonding domains).

Yes, it is not symetrical so it has a slightly positve end toward the oxygen and a slightly negative end toward the fluorine since Fluorine is more electronegative than oxygen.

Are HF and CO2 linear and therefore polar?

HF is polar and linear. But CO2 is nonpolar because it is linear. It has two equally polar bond pulling electrons in opposite directions and cancel each other out.

What are the CO2 levels doing to cause polar bear extinction?

Rising levels of CO2 and methane in the atmosphere are causing the temperatures to be warmer in the Arctic. Polar bears can only hunt when ice covers the ocean, but warmer temperatures melt the ice, which causes polar bears to starve.
