It's communist because a dictator came in and took over China.
The answerer to the above question has no intelligence/knowledge of history.
A. Read the damn Communist manifesto. Dictatorships have nothing to do with communism.
B. Mao Zedong was the head of a popular movement, in competition with the brutal, uncaring Nationalist movement under Chiang Kai-Shek.
C. Their economy is actually one of the most cutthroat capitalist economies in the world.
To put it simply, NO.
To be specific, China was never fully communist to begin with. To keep things short, Mao ZeDong (who declared China to be "communist" in 1949) never accepted communism in its entirety, choosing instead to create his own mix of socialism and oligarchy.
However, ever since Chairman Deng Xiaoping instituted liberal and free trade reforms in the 1970s, China cannot even be considered socialist (which is the "lower" and more "general" form of communism), and China is certainly not communist as its policies violates key tenets of communism.
Not as bad as it used to be. There is still a Central Committee and few "open" elections, but it is really more of a Dictatorship that is attempting some economic reforms (such as allowing a highly regulated form of capitalism - such as exists in Russia, as well).
It is now starting to become more freely e.g. you are allowed to have your own money.
Officially, yes. At least when it comes to the 'one party' thing. Next time, read wikipedia.

What was the reaction in America to the Communist takeover if China?
Now there is only one China in the world -- People's Republic of China or PRC for short, Taiwan is province of PRC, so there isn't communist China or capitalism China or other China. Only one China is PRC, HKSAR, the Macao Special Administrative Region and Taiiwan province are parts of PRC. so 'Communist China' may be a misleading. MSN: wu.yupu@live.cn site: http://10link.net
