the centralized directory database in the domain model is NTDS.DIT(directory information tree) but for the local sstem not connected to domain is SAM
Database names are the identifying names that users provide when creating a database. These names must be unique within the location in which they are cataloged. The name differentiates the database from any other database in either the local database directory or the system database directory
Use NFS/CIFS/similar protocol to mount remote directory appearing as local. Then this directory appears as local to the database. This means you don't need to do anything special on the DB side. Just create the directory object as usual, the operating system is responsible for actually moving files back and forth. If you use NFS, it's best to use "hard" option to prevent strange database behaviour when remote machine becomes unresponsible.
Windows 2000 Active Directory data store, the actual database file, is %SystemRoot%\ntds\NTDS.DIT
Database tuning is comprised of a group of activities used to optimize and regulate the performance of a database. It refers to configuration of the database files, the database management system (DBMS), as well as the hardware and operating system on which the database is hosted. The goal of database tuning is to maximize the application of system resources in an attempt to execute transactions as efficiently and quickly as possible.
