Most of France is in Europe, well north of the equator. However, the nation of France includes certain overseas "departments" (similar to American "states"), which are part of France in the same sense that Alaska and Hawaii are part of the United States of America. In particular, the French department of Réunion lies far south of the equator. In that sense, France is located both north and south of the equator.
The 45 latitude crosses very close to the center of France. If you are north of this line, you will be closer to the north pole. If you are south of it, you are closer to the equator. You would have to cross the equator to reach the south pole, so it is definitely further than the equator.
