The Hubble Telescope was carried into orbit in April 1990. It is still in orbiting in space. In 2009 it had its final servicing and will probably last until sometime in 2014. Its successor, the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), will take its' place.

∙ 13y agoThe telescope is in space, meaning it is not on the surface of the Earth but it is just about 600 kilometers above the surface (less than one tenth of the Earth's radius above the surface of the planet). So it is very close to the Earth (in solar system reference).

In fact, the Shuttle Atlantis is (here on May 18, 2009) currently in orbit replacing gyroscopes and batteries, installing new upgraded telescopes and instruments, and in general refurbishing the HST to spend another ten years or so in orbit.

∙ 11y agoThe Hubble is in a nearly circular low Earth orbit at a height of about 350 miles, which means it takes a little over an hour and a half to make an orbit.
It's inclined 28.5 degrees relative to the equator, which means the furthest north it ever gets is the very southern tip of Florida or the Sinai Peninsula. The furthest south it goes is about the middle of Australia, and it just misses the northern part of Lesotho.

∙ 14y agoNo. Geostationary satellites orbit 22,000 miles up, far out of range of the Space Shuttle. The Hubble is in an orbit about 180 miles up, so that astronauts on the Shuttle can perform repairs.
