John the Baptist was Jesus' second cousin.

Another John, who was called "the Beloved," was a disciple of Jesus and author of the Gospel John, First Epistle of John, Second Epistle of John, Third Epistle of John, and Revelation.

A:

The Book of Revelation is signed by a person called John, writing from the island of Patmos, near Greece. Some of the Church Fathers, late in the second century believed that this John was probably the apostle John, and for that reason sought to have the Book considered as canonical. Other Church Fathers disputed the authorship by the apostle John, but were eventually swayed because even the possibility of apostolic authorship meant that the Book of Revelation could not be discarded. Thus, the Book of Revelation was credited to the apostle John for nearly two thousand years.

Modern scholars point out that the style and theology of Revelation is too different from John's Gospel forit to have been written by the same author, in addition to which they no longer accept John as the the author of the Gospel that now bears his name. To distinguish the author of Revelation both from the apostle John and the anonymous author of John's Gospel, he is now commonly called 'John of Patmos'.

Presuming you mean the name John in the New Testament, then there are two.

The first, John the Baptist, was one who came to 'prepare the way' for Jesus Christ the messiah. He is an important figure in that the visit of the angel to his father Zacharias to announce the coming birth of John, broke around 400 years of silence in terms of God speaking and dealing directly with His people.

13But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John. 14And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth. 15For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb. 16And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God. 17And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.

The ministry of John the Baptist was particularly successful in that great numbers of people came to see him and hear his message of repentance. He was eventually beheaded by orders of Herod Antipas.

The second John was believed to have been possibly a disciple or follower of John before he went to follow Jesus. John was the brother of James, both sons of Zebedee and they were fishermen around Lake Galilee.

This John, also known as the beloved disciple was the author of the Gospel of John and the 3 letters of John. The Gospel written 'in order that you might believe' presents some of the clearest evidence regarding the divinity of Jesus Christ as well as His love for all people.

There are two 'Johns' of note.

First, John the baptist was Jesus' cousin who baptised people in the river Jordan as a prequel to the arrival of Jesus.

Second, John the apostle, one of the 12 closest comanions of Jesus, is known as 'the disciple whom Jesus loved' - ie he was his closest friend. Scholars believe that he was also the author of the fourth gospel and the three letters in the New Testament that bear his name.
