Counties in Maryland are divided into three types: charter counties, commissioner counties, and code home rule counties. There is no designation of "commonwealth" for counties in Maryland.

Also, the designation of certain U.S. states as commonwealths has no legal meaning. "The Commonwealth of Virginia" is legally exactly equivalent to "The State of Virginia."
