Pluto is a dwarf planet by definition, but it is also a : * TNO or Trans-Neptunian Object - orbit the Sun outside the orbit of Neptune; once orbits are determined they are given permanent "minor planet" numbers, and if candidates for dwarf planets, they are named. * KBO or Kuiper Belt Object - inhabits the innermost of three Trans-Neptunian regions (the other two are the "scattered disc" and the Oort Cloud). * plutoid - a trans-Neptunian dwarf planet or candidate * plutino - a trans-Neptunian body locked in 3:2 orbital resonance with Neptune, such that for every 3 Neptune solar orbits, the body orbits the Sun 2 times (a important factor in maintaining orbital stability)

See related question for the definition of planet.

I don't know if it's logical or not, but I have my own theory on this matter.

Pluto IS a planet, since it revolves around the sun, like the other planets.

Now, if we were living on Jupiter, which is impossible because Jupiter doesn't have a surface, we would see the Earth as a dwarf planet, because it's smaller than Jupiter.

What I'm getting at is, I think that a planet can be any size. If a round ball with an atmosphere of some description revolves around the sun regularly, then it's a planet.

Moreover, Pluto has 3 moons as well, one of which, Charon, is a little larger than half of Pluto.

Blame Eris. Eris is the Greek goddess of discord. When Eris was discovered in 2005, it was found to be larger than Pluto. Astronomers began questioning what should be a planet. In 2006, the International Astronomical Union had astronomers discussing what makes a planet. Most agreed on the rules of a planet had to be in orbit around the sun and that it was large enough to have gravity pull it in the shape of a ball. This is called hydrostatic equilibrium. This would mean that Pluto would be a planet, so would Ceres, Eris and possibly many more Kuiper Belt objects. There was a committee of astronomers that wanted to be more specific. Pluto was less than half the size of Mercury and Eris was only slightly bigger than Pluto. They came up with a third rule about a planet must clear its orbit. This would eliminate Eris, Pluto and Ceres (and future Kuiper Belt objects.) Brother Guy Consolmagno of the Vatican Observatory was head of the committee. "Clearing the neighborhood around it's orbit" means that the planet is gravitationally dominent. Alan Stern and Harold Levinson wrote a paper on this in 2000 that was presented to the IAU. The ruling was and is controversial. It is possible that at a later time the IAU may change the decision again. Mike Brown who discovered Eris thinks that is silly to call Ceres, Pluto, and Eris planets and not call our moon a planet when it is bigger than all of them.

Because Pluto meets all of the requirements for classification as a dwarf planet:

  1. It orbits the sun
  2. It is in hydrostatic equilibrium
  3. It has not cleared its orbit from asteroids and other debris

What is Pluto today?

Pluto has been reclassified as a dwarf planet. Otherwise it is a cartoon dog depending on your reference.

How many planets are there at present?

In this star system there are eight known planets. Previously there were nine, but Pluto has since been reclassified as a dwarf planet. Charon, previously regarded as a satellite of Pluto, has also been reclassified as a dwarf planet.

Do astronomers often consider Pluto and Charon a double planet?

No, because Pluto has been reclassified as a dwarf planet. Dwarf planets are not planets, despite the confusing term. Before Pluto was reclassified as a dwarf planet, sometimes the Pluto-Charon system was thought of as a double planet, so you can sometimes find that in outdated but authoritative-seeming references.

What space object was reclassified as a dwarf planet in 2006?

Five such bodies were reclassified as "dwarf planets" in 2006. The most famous, or infamous, has been the demotion of Pluto.

Can Pluto be a planet or not why?

Pluto is not a star and never has been, it has recently been reclassified from a planet to a dwarf planet.

What planet are scientist saying is not a planet?

Pluto is the planet that scientist are saying is not a planet. Scientists are not saying any particular planet is not a planet. Simply that Pluto has been reclassified as a dwarf planet.

Which satellite is not considered a satellite now?

Are you think of Pluto? If so it remains a satellite but has been reclassified as a dwarf planet.

What is the second to smallest planet in your solar system?

Earlier, Pluto was the smallest planet and Mercury was next. Now, Mercury is the smallest planet and hence, Mars is the second smallest. Now that Pluto has been reclassified as a dwarf planet, the second smallest is Mars. Before Pluto was reclassified as a dwarf planet, Mercury was the second smallest planet. The second smallest planet in the solar system is Mars with a diameter of 4,221.6 miles.Mars is the 2nd smallest planet, Mercury is the smallest.Mercury

Is Pluto in the solar system?

Yes and no. It was decided on August 24, 2006 that Pluto be classified a dwarf planet. Because dwarf planets are a subclassification of planet, it would be accurate to call Pluto a planet, in a general setting (bearing in mind, though, that there are 10+ other dwarf planets in our solar system, some larger than Pluto).

How is Pluto different from the gas planets?

Pluto is not a planet anymore, it has been reclassified as a dwarf planet since 2006. It is very different from the four gas giants, much smaller and less massive. It has a solid.

How was Pluto destroyed?

Pluto did not disintegrate. It is still there. The only thing that has changed is a new formal definition of a planet, and Pluto did not make the cut.

What number planet is pluto?

It depends if you count all planets, or just dwarf planets:On the list of all 13 planets including dwarf planets, pluto is the 10th from the sun.If you only count only the 5 dwarf planets, it is the second dwarf planet from the sun (the first is Ceres).
