The longest running continuous cartoon or animated series is Japan's Sazae-san. It began in 1969 and still produces episodes today.

The longest "lasting" cartoon as in the longest one that has simply existed on the air while not producing new episodes appears to be The Woody Woodpecker Show. It began in 1957 and continued in syndication until 2015.

No, not even close.

Without knowing which nation you are referring... to name a few...

"Meet the Press" has been airing in the U.S. since 1947.

'Panorama' has been airing in the U.K. since 1953.

'Four Corners' has been airing in Australia since 1961.

'Hasta la Cocina' has been airing in Mexico since 1960.

The Jetsons is older having debuted in 1962 but it only lasted 3 seasons, the first from 1962 to 1963 & the second & third seasons lasting from 1985 to 1987.

It is shown on Boomerang from time to time but currently (as of March 2015) it is not airing.

The Simpsons debuted in 1989 and continues into its 27th season... so if you mean which show has been on longer with new episodes, obviously The Simpsons.

If you mean which has simply existed on TV the longest, it would probably be The Jetsons.

The Jetsons isn't even remotely close to being the longest running TV series.

It ran for three seasons, 1962-1963, 1985 & 1987. That's a drop of water in the ocean of TV runs.

Meet the Press has been airing since 1947 and remains on the air today.

There are dozens & dozens of shows, over a hundred, even two hundred, that lasted longer than The Jetsons.

No, while Sesame Street's 48 years on the air [as of 2017] certainly puts it near the top of television runs, there are still 23 American shows that have lasted longer than Sesame Street.

When did the The Simpsons break the record for the longest running animated TV show?

It didn't and won't break that record because it isn't the longest running animated TV program.Japan's Sazae-San has been on the air since 1969 and still produces episodes today. However, the longest running prime time [e.g. American] animated program before The Simpsons was The Flintstones which ran for six seasons [1960-1966], so when The Simpsons' 140th episode aired Team Homer, that was when the broke The Flintstones record.

It's never become the longest running prime time series, nor will it ever earn that accolade. The Simpsons is the longest running American animated program & the longest running prime time scripted comedy & the longest running prime time American sitcom but the title of simply 'the longest running prime time series' belongs to The Hallmark Hall of Fame which has been airing for 64 seasons [& still does] followed by Walt Disney Presents which has been airing for 54 seasons [& still does].If you want to narrow it down to weekly series, 60 minutes is the longest running prime time series debuting in 1968.
