There were no connections between the two. Remember that Jack the Ripper was real and Sherlock Holmes was a fictitious character. There have been a couple of attempts to merge the two and there is at least one movie that connects the two.

How did Jack the Ripper help the popularity of Sherlock Holmes?

Sherlock Holmes was introduced in A Study in Scarlet (1887), followed by The Sign of Four in 1890, but didn't really take hold of the public's imagination until Strand magazine, newly founded in 1891, published a series of short stories called "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes." From that point on the public couldn't get enough of Holmes and his always reliable confidant, John H. Watson, a retired military doctor. During the 71 days in 1888 that Jack the Ripper killed 5 prostitutes in Whitechapel, the police did not have the detective skills that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote about in his Sherlock Holmes stories. This made Sherlock Holmes the hero in those days.

Was HH Holmes the same person as Jack the Ripper?

No!Jack the Ripper is the moniker associated with a series of murders of prostitutes which occurred in London's Whitechapel district during the latter half of 1888.Sherlock Holmes is a fictional character created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Holmes is a detective who lives in Baker Street, London. The first Holmes story "A Study in Scarlet" was first published in 1887, so in that sense Jack the Ripper and the character of Sherlock Holmes were contemporaries, but there the association ends.A film, "Murder by Decree" (1978) starring Christopher Plummer as Sherlock Holmes and James Mason as Dr. Watson, the character of Holmes becomes involved in the story of Jack the Ripper, but there is no reference to the Whitechapel murders in any of Conan Doyle's original stories.A couple of witness statements given during the original Ripper investigation suggested that the killer may have worn a deerstalker hat, which is also coincidentally associated with Holmes.

Some years ago in a Borders bookstore there was a hardcover book that had Sherlock Holmes and Irene Adler married and going to the Chicagos World Fair for a honeymoon is this book real or not?

The book you are asking about might be called 'Castle Rouge: A Novel of Suspense featuring Sherlock Holmes, Irene Adler, and Jack the Ripper' by Carole Nelson Douglas, which is a parody or pastiche of the Sherlock Holmes character. It is not a true Sherlock Holmes story. There have been many stories and books written by fans of Conan Doyle who have created alternative Sherlock Holmes stories, attempting to be as true to the original story as possible.
