South Africa's most famous statesman was Nelson Mandela, who was the country's first democratically elected president in 1994. Prior to 1994 South Africa was notorious around the world for its oppressive and abusive race separation system, called Apartheid, which was used to forcibly control the 'non-white' majority population for the economic benefit of the white minority ruling class.
