South Africa is one of Africa's wealthiest nations. It has the highest GDP value in Africa. Its stock exchange (JSE) is one of the strongest in the world. However, due to a large population and unemployment, the GDP per capita is low. Therefore it is not easy to judge which is the richest country in Africa since a country like Seychelles can have a very low GDP value, but since it is a small country it can have a high GDP per capita value.

South Africa is definitely not a poor country. With a current GDP of $408 billion US dollars and $8,243 per capita, it's considered to be an upper-middle income nation. I would say the problem in South Africa remains inequality which is a failure politically by it's government in wealth distribution. South Africa is also has about $2 Trillion US dollar in Gold and platinum reserves. Infrastructure in South Africa is world class and brand new compared to some developed regions. The architecture of the South African economy needs to be changed in order solve it's current inequality issues.

South Africa is the largest economy in Africa. However, most South Africans are very poor and live on minimum wage or government grants. So although it is a very prosperous country, the people do not always share in the prosperity.

Are there toilets in South Africa?

Yes. Like any country there are people who are not poor and have the facilities like other parts of the world. Homeless people and poor people in South Africa, like in any country in the world - including rich ones - may not have such easy access to sanitary facilities. The places you're most likely to see as a tourist, yeah.

Who is the richest country in Africa?

According to the Phillips Junior School Atlas which I read in school, Libya is the richest country in Africa. The reason for this is mainly due to its oil reserves, but most of North Africa, like Tunisia, Morocco and Egypt also have many natural resources which make them rich. Economically however, South Africa is probably Africa's richest country, but according to the book, it was classed as 'poor' or 'very poor'. There is no exact answer, this is just information which I learnt from the book I read.
