Is Sudan a less developed country?

Sudan is the largest country in Africa and the Arab world, and tenth largest in the world by area. It has a great and long history going back to the Pharaohic times and a wonderful people with a rich cultural heritage.

However, Sudan's political regime appears, from the outside, to be mired in ethnic wars, corruption and racial violence. This means that the country can not develop or participate in civilized world society while these conditions remain. Therefore, sadly, the answer is 'Yes' Sudan is a less developed country.

[Note that the country has now split into two, with the mainly christian south forming the new country of South Sudan].

Sudan is a third world, or developing, country. The majority of people are very poor and live in small tribal communities. The Genocide currently taking place in that country has made matters much worse, with thousands of people dying every day.
