The canonization of Thomas Becket as a saint was based on his martyrdom and the subsequent veneration by the faithful, rather than on his personal actions or character. In the eyes of the Catholic Church, the sanctity of a person is judged on their commitment to faith and willingness to suffer for their beliefs. As such, Becket's sainthood can be seen as a recognition of his sacrifice rather than a judgment of his life as a whole.

Canterbury Cathedral was important to Thomas Becket because as soon as he became archbishop, he had to respect the cathedral and he had to represent it in a way that he knew everything about it so that if anyone wanted to know something, then he could give them an answer. If he couldn't them an answer, that wouldn't be very good because if you are an Archbishop of a Cathedral then it is your responsibility to protect it and know everything about it.

In the Church of Rome at that time it was nearly automatic for any Christian martyr to be made a saint. A martyr was anyone who died for their Christian beliefs, which was certainly the case with Thomas Becket - it was also exceptionally rare for an Archbishop to be murdered on sacred, hallowed ground (inside the cathedral) and Archbishops who were murdered in that way were considered significant martyrs.

Furthermore, miracle cures were soon associated with the temporary coffin in which Becket was first placed after the murder (even before the shrine was established in 1220). Miracles were also a key element in canonisation. Some of these miracles are recorded in pictorial form in early 13th century stained glass windows at Canterbury cathedral.
