Is Whaling increaasing?
um i did a debate in year 7 about this topic that all whaling should be banned i was saying that this was true and my team argument was not all whaling should be banned but most this means commercial whaling should be banned and whaling don by tribes and for food may still continue. ps my team won the debate .and i would say some whaling should be allowed but not all whaling hope…
The International Whaling Commission is the agency responsible for introducing the ban on commercial whaling. In 1982 the commission agreed the 'The 1986 Moritoriam' which effectively banned commercial whaling from 1986, although Scientific and Aboriginal subsistence whaling is still allowed under strict quotas.
Whaling has been an activity for thousands of years, archealogical discoveries in South Korea suggest evidence of whaling occuring as early as 6000 BC. Commercial whaling is widely though to have begun in the late 1800s and early 1900s with the invention of various whaling devices such as the flexible harpoon and steam winches.
Whaling can sometimes be a good thing, as the people who work in the whaling industry need the money earned to feed their families. Jobs in Japan where alot of whaling takes place are quite sparse, so whaling can help to boost their economy too. Plus whale meat is a traditional and tasty delicacy! Hope this helped :D
