My Daughter has a 1988 240DL and the only time we have had problems with the Power Steering (P/S) is when the belt has broken. My wife also had a 1992 740 and never had problems with the P/S. Both vehicle had done over 150,000 miles. The steering on both were excellent. * First check that the P/S belt is intact and isn't slipping. It's driven off the A/C compressor pulley so if the A/C belt is slipping or the compressor bearings or clutch are going bad this could affect the power steering. Also if the A/C belt breaks the power steering obviously won't work. * If the belts won't tighten or keep slipping and you can't set the P/S pulley to run parallel to the A/C, then the rubber bushings on the P/S mounts may be worn and need to be replaced. * Check for P/S fluid leaks. If a hose is leaking, replace it. If the unit is leaking fluid, it will be cheapest to get an exact replacement from a breaker's yard. * If all of this is O.K. then you could be looking at damage to the steering rack. Hope this helps, EMT
You can add power steering fluid to your 1988 Chevy Astro by removing the top to the power steering fluid reservoir. Pour the fluid directly into the reservoir.

I am not sure what you mean by cords? Do you mean power steering hoses? VBD
In the power steering pump located on the front right side of the engine. It will have a pulley on it

I have an 1988 Deville. On my car the power steering pump is on top of engine next to the belt tensioner. You will see a reservoir with a plastic cap . Remove cap and put fluid in there.
The power steering pump is by the firewall on pasanger side of car. Fill it with transmission fluid. The cap has a dipstick on it.

If the power steering box is leaking below the adjusting nut, it is like that the seal is faulty. Replace the seal on the power steering box.
Pentosin, about $15US at Partsgeek.com
top pully, nearest to the front of the vehicle.
The power steering fluid reservoir on my 1988 4 cylinder camry is located under the hood on the passenger side, it is a yellow plastic reservoir with a black cap that says something to the effect of "use dexron II".
Power steering fluid level is checked at the power steering fluid resevoir. It is located on the passenger side in front of engine. If you can't find it follow the hoses up from the power steering pump wich is on the passenger side of the car mounted on the front ( facing the passenger side wheel well ) and bottom of the motor.
A good quality power steering fluid from any auto parts store will work. If you are not near a store with power steering fluid you can substitute a good tranmission fluid for Chrysler vehicles. BE CAREFUL AND CHECK THE YEAR , ACCORDING TO CHRYSLER'S 1985 MANUAL, NEVER , NEVER, NEVER USE TRANSMISSION FLUID IN THE POWER STEERING PUMP, POWER STEERING FLUID ONLY.
Does your car have the 4 cylinder engine or the V6?
power steering pump is located on the left side behind the engine if you are looking head on at the car it has a dip stick to indicate how much fluid it needs.
