No, the number of alpacas are actually increasing. Additional Info: It is estimated that most of the world's population of alpacas are in Peru (about 87%) and Bolivia follows with (about 9.5%). This group of the species is under the control of tradional pastoralists, who usually keep both alpacas and llamas together. This is the largest group of the population in this South American region. So, this circumstance creates problems of crossbreeding between the alpacas, and the llamas, in the largest group of the population. This hybridization of the alpaca is creating an endangered species due to it's genetic profile being compromised by crossbreeding with the llama. This has been going on for generations and continues today. This species is not listed as endangered now, but it would seem research and study has already begun.
