The marlin is a large game fish. It has an elongated body up to 2.5 m long, a spearlike snout, and a long rigid dorsal fin which extends forwards to form a crest. Marlin are fast swimmers, occurring in all seas and hunting small and large fish. The larger species include the Atlantic blue marlin, Makaira nigricans, which have been reliably recorded in excess of 5.0 m in length and 1,800 lb (820 kg) in weight, and black marlin, Makaira indica, which have been reliably recorded in excess of 5.0 m in length and 1,470 lb (670 kg) in weight. They are popular sporting fishes in certain tropical areas and are also commercially important as a food fish. A marlin is a primary character in Ernest Hemingway's The Old Man and the Sea. Marlin are rarely table fare. Most modern sport fisherman release marlin after unhooking. Some marlin that are top record setting fish are taken and weighed on shore. Those records are most often recorded in the IGFA World Record Game Fishes books.

∙ 15y agoA very large one may measure as much as 15 feet but the rod and reel record fish was only 12 feet 10.5 inches long. Another fish caught in the Bahamas weighed 650 pounds and measured 12 feet 1 inch.

∙ 12y agoThis is a good question and I don't know as anyone can really answer it. Truthfully, thousands of huge marlin have been caught over the centuries, that went unrecorded.
I have heard reports of blue marlin growing larger than 3,000 lbs.
A blue marlin was caught off of Okinawa by commercial fishermen with a hand-line that weighed in excess of 2,200 lbs. It was too big for the scale that it was weighed on.
There was a fish caught out of Honolulu in 1970 that weighed 1,805 Lbs. It was caught by a crew of inexperienced anglers who took turns realing it in.
This is the largest fish ever taken by rod and reel.

∙ 10y agoIt really depends what type of blue marlin you are looking for. THere is pacific and then theres atlantic. For the Pacific I'd recommend going to Hawaii. FOr the atlantic I'd recommend St. THomas or the Dominican Republic
