There are two classes of seed-bearing plants.

  1. Gymnosperms (naked seed) are perennials and most are evergreen. They include conifers, the sago palms, the ginko and a tropical shrub/vine.
  2. Angiosperms (seed vessel) are flowering plants producing fruit and seeds. Their seeds have an outer covering made from parental tissue. There are about 250,000 different species.
The carnation plant, with the beautiful, scented flowers, is an angiosperm.

A carnation is an angiosperm, not a gymnosperm.
