The terms coniferous and deciduous refer to trees, rather than particular kinds of forests. Forests described as coniferous or deciduous are those containing primarily those kinds of trees. Coniferous trees are trees which don't change over the seasons, like evergreens and other pine trees.

Pine trees are coniferous trees and considered to be softwood. Softwood trees typically have needles and cones and are gymnosperm trees that include conifers. Hardwood is from angiosperm trees.

Evergreen trees are softwood trees.

-------------------------------------------------------

This is true in temperate climates but in the tropical biome, evergreen trees can be both hardwood and softwood species. The real difference is not if the tree is evergreen or deciduous but in the volume of wood laid down each growing season. Hardwood species deposit a smaller amount of denser woody material than softwoods.
