A dental hygienist is someone who is trained and licensed in preventive dental services, such as: cleans your teeth and takes x-rays. They usually work in conjunction with a dentist.

One is certainly not better than the other. They both have their own roles and are equally important in the dental office. A better word for dental technician is "dental assistant". The assistant helps the dentist. The hygienist cleans teeth and teaches patients how to take care of their mouth. So it's really like comparing apples and Oranges. a dental technician is NOT a dental assistant,we dental technicians work separately as required by law in our own dental laboratory facility with high tech equipment that we have trained for over many years. we hold our own certificate or diploma,a dentist does not do our work and from my experience the dentist contacts his laboratory daily for advice and consultation. for your peace of mind always make sure your dentist uses a trusted partner technician,he is the technician behind your work and partner to the dentist.
