The results of being bitten are not pretty and healing from the venom results in deformed areas around the bite. Without proper treatment, a bite can cause sepsis or other problems that may require amputation. It is important to get treatment as soon as possible to prevent these problems, as well as getting anti-venom to reduce to effectiveness of the venom.

Vipers(and other snakes) do not always inject venom with every strike. It can take some snakes weeks to build up to a full venom sac, so they may not inject venom when striking non-prey animals or humans.
