a seal is a vertebrate because a vertebrate has its skeleton on the inside of its body
Vertebrates are animals with a spinal or vertebral column. Seals are vertebrates (so are humans).
The seal is a vertebrate because it has a backbone. All memmbers of the vertebrate or Chordata phylum have backbones.
