A toll-free number is essentially an automated collect (reverse charges) call. When you dial a toll-free number, your local telephone company switch looks up the number in a database to find out how to route the call and then hands the call off to the long distance company chosen by the owner of the toll-free number. The owner of the number pays for the long distance charges, and also pays a surcharge to compensate the owner of the pay phone if you are calling from one. However, if you are calling a toll-free number from a mobile phone (cell phone), you will in most cases still use your airtime minutes.

In most countries, toll-free calls from a landline are completely free, but in some countries you may pay a charge comparable to a local call. Calls to toll-free numbers from mobile phones (cell phones) will in most cases still use airtime minutes, charged according to your calling plan.
