Atoms are not alive because they don't fit the scientific standard of life. There are five qualifications that all life must have and atoms only really meet like two of them. They are:

1) Living things can grow 2)Living things can respond to stimuli 3)Living things can reproduce 4)Living things can change and evolve 5) Living things can self organize into systems (eg Organ systems, ecosystems, etc...)

there is still a lot that scientists don't know about atoms and the particles that build them so you can draw your own conclusions. Atoms from a strict scientific perspective are more understood as an expression of energy than life. They make life happen by supplying it with the energy it needs to exist.

Hope this answers your question.

On the other hand, #1. Because we don't fully understand them, yet classify them as "not alive", leaves some issues. Living things can grow, and since living things are made up of atoms, this also means the multiplication of atoms...We (lifeforms) can not grow without other things coming into play (nourishment, etc.) or we don't grow..We get weak and die...We don't know the atom enough to say it does not take nourishment from anything to survive...There is an energy/power that makes us alive...and it can't happen without the "cocktail" of atoms that make us up..#2. Living things respond to stimuli...What happens to an atom(s) when heated, when cooled?..What happens when you split an atom?..You get a reaction!..#3. Living things can reproduce...We can't reproduce without them, we can't grow without them, because we are made of them!..Bottom line!...We ARE who we are, because we are made up of "living" active atoms! (and by the way, atoms also fade and die)...Their "life" is the reason for our "life"!

Yes an atom is alive because if a sodium ion can carry information in the brain that means that ions of sodium are information carriers. In NaCl solution, if Na+ ion can carry information then that means that all ions of Na have information which has to be sensed. The sodium atoms can carry information that means that they know that they have to carry information. This means and clarifies that atoms know what to do. An atom is living because of the energy that is absorbed in the form of radiation. Due to this energy electrons are able to revolve around the nucleus. Atoms can neither be created. They will not destroy themselves. If an atom has more amount of energy than required then an isotope is formed. These are my views on an atom. an atom can absorb energy like living beings do by eating. They can excrete in the form of reflecting the radiant energy that falls on them.

A:

No. Living things reproduce; atoms, almost by definition, do not.

To be considered a life form, the entity must consume nutrient, metabolize, and reproduce. [Some would add that it should have a cell wall].

Electrons seem rather inert against these criteria.

An atom is not a living organism, it is an inanimate particle that makes up an object.

No..... Atoms can neither be created nor destroyed under normal conditions. They can although be turned into energy. E=mc2
