∙ 6y agoElephants are herbivores, that is, they eat plants. They have been known to eat salt, chalk and dirt to obtain minerals which they might not be able to get from a purely plant diet. They are not predators.

∙ 13y agoNo a lion is a hunter. Animals such as hyenas are scavengers.
Lions are not strictly scavengers, but they are scavenger-hunters. When they come across dead corpses, they will eat it.
Many lone or old males are strictly scavengers because they can not hunt efficiently. Their failure rate is too high and hunting expends too much energy.
The misconception that lions are hunters and not scavengers is wrong. Lions do not belong in the scavenger category, but they "do" eat already dead animals.

∙ 7y agoLions will scavenge and seem to have no problem eating carrion. To them it is a free meal they did not have to risk injury or death to obtain.

∙ 7y agoWhen a free meal is available that does not require much effort and poses little danger, a lion will take advantage of carrion. When lions cannot scavenge, they kill their own prey.
