People often refer to the clock at the Palace of Westminster (Houses of Parliament) as 'Big Ben. However, Big Ben is actually the 14 ton bell inside the clock tower and was named after Sir Benjamin Hall who was Commissioner of Works when the bell was installed.

Big Ben is synonymous as the Great Bell, the Clock and the Tower in which it is encased. Originally it was only the Great Bell named after Sir Benjamin Hall a politician of the time and commissioner of works. The correct name for the tower is 'The Queen Elizabeth Tower' renamed after the Queen for her Diamond jubilee in 2012.

The name 'Big Ben' has been used over the years to represent the whole clock, bell and tower and it would not be incorrect to call the complete clock tower Big Ben. It was supposed to originally be named after the commissioner of works, Sir Benjamin Hall.
In September 2012 the tower was named "Elizabeth Tower" in recognition of Her Majesty's Diamond Jubilee.
