Why is corrugated cardboard used for packaging?

A corrugated box manufacturer can design and create custom packaging solutions "around the product". This means that corrugated cardboard can be used as both a decorative and protective packaging solution as well as a point-of-purchase display. For example, corrugated POP displays can be ingeniously designed to save money by eliminating the need for individual parts that require assembly. These custom corrugated shipping boxes gives your product the ability to enter retail outlets that may not have the shelf space, but do have floor space available. Corrugated box manufacturers may offer a consultative approach based around innovative design, cost savings, rapid turnaround, and high quality. These factors make corrugated cardboard an extremely attractive option for shipping and display.

Why is cardboard called cardboard?

Cardboard boxes are industrially prefabricated boxes, primarily used for packaging goods and materials. Specialists in industry seldom use the term cardboard because it does not denote a specific material.[1][2]The term cardboard may refer to a variety of heavy paper-like materials,[3] including card stock, corrugated fiberboard,[4] or paperboard.[5] The meaning of the term may depend on the locale, contents, construction, and personal choice. The first commercial paperboard (not corrugated) box was produced in England in 1817.[9]The Scottish-born Robert Gair invented the pre-cut cardboard or paperboard box in 1890 - flat pieces manufactured in bulk that folded into boxes. Gair's invention came about as a result of an accident: he was a Brooklyn printer and paper-bag maker during the 1870s, and one day, while he was printing an order of seed bags, a metal ruler normally used to crease bags shifted in position and cut them. Gair discovered that by cutting and creasing in one operation he could make prefabricated paperboard boxes. Applying this idea to corrugated boxboard was a straightforward development when the material became available around the turn of the twentieth century.[10]The advent of flaked cereals increased the use of cardboard boxes. The first to use cardboard boxes as cereal cartons was the Kellogg Company.Corrugated (also called pleated) paper was patented in England in 1856, and used as a liner for tall hats, but corrugated boxboard was not patented and used as a shipping material until December 20, 1871. The patent was issued to Albert Jones of New York City for single-sided (single-face) corrugated board.[11] Jones used the corrugated board for wrapping bottles and glass lantern chimneys. The first machine for producing large quantities of corrugated board was built in 1874 by G. Smyth, and in the same year Oliver Long improved upon Jones's design by inventing corrugated board with liner sheets on both sides.[12] This was corrugated cardboard as we know it today. The first corrugated cardboard box manufactured in the USA was in 1895.[13] By the early 1900s, wooden crates and boxes were being replaced by corrugated paper shipping cartons.By 1908, the terms "corrugated paper-board" and "corrugated cardboard" were both in use in the paper trade.[14]The Musée du Cartonnage et de l'Imprimerie (Museum of the Cardboard Box) in Valréas, France traces the history of cardboard box making and the art involved in printing, in the region.[15] Cardboard boxes have been used there since 1840 for transporting the Bombyx mori moth and its eggs from Japan to Europe by silk manufacturers, and for more than a century the manufacture of cardboard boxes was a major industry in the area.[citation needed]

CHOOSING CORRUGATED CARDBOARD?

Cardboard is a wood pulp product, a material made by manufacturing paper that is thick, relatively stiff, and can be cut, formed and coated in accordance with the purpose it will be used for. Cardboard has been manufactured since the early 1900’s, and is one of the most common materials used for packaging and storing a wide variety of products. Manufacturing cardboard is surprisingly technical; being engineered for adequate strength to bear the weight of the contents it is designed to store, and treated by a variety of methods. Cardboard can be wax coated to resist moisture, or treated with clay to make a surface smooth enough to accept printing. Cardboard is also flexible enough to be cut, folded, glued and shaped into a wide variety of needful products. Cardboard is available in a variety of forms and finishes, from thin poster board to the thicker binder board commonly used for manufacturing hardcover books. The most familiar cardboard is the corrugated type, made of two layered Kraft paper liners separated by a fluted or crimped layer of heavy paper sandwiched between them. Corrugated cardboard is designated by weight, with 200-225 pound test being a typical weight of the average box. The strength of the cardboard is found in the size of the fluted inner layer, and how wide the flutings that comprise this inner layer are spaced. The heaviest cardboards are made by gluing two or more sets of fluted medium layered between multiple Kraft liners. Corrugated cardboard is available in weights up to 1000 pound test, manufactured to box heavy items such as engine blocks, or used as a means to separate large items on pallets to be stacked in storage. Corrugated cardboard is becoming increasingly popular for the manufacture of product display stands, providing padding to reduce breakage of items during transit, and has limitless other uses. Corrugated cardboard takes paint well, has insulative properties, and can be coated to resist oils and water. Quality control insures the strength and durability of corrugated cardboard in the manufacturing process, testing for glue strength, moisture content, capacity to resist bursting and degree of warp.
