Ionic =)

==================

You might think the bonds are ionic if you believe the misconception that all metal-nonmetal compounds contain ions, and are thus "ionic." The bonds in Na3P have only 33% ionic character, meaning the bonds have much greater covalent character than ionic character. There are no 100% ionic bonds, and in Na3P there are no Na+ ions nor P^3- ions. Nor are P^3- ions produced when Na3P reacts with water. Phosphine gas is liberated from a solution of sodium hydroxide. The reaction is very exothermic.

Na3P(s) + 3HOH(l) --> 3NaOH(aq) + PH3(g)
