Because octane is a hydrocarbon because it contains atoms of thr elements of carbon & hydrogen ONLY.

If it contains an atom(s) of any other element e.g. oxygen , nitrogen etc., it is NOT a hydrocarbon.

e.g. CH3CH2OH (Ethanol) is NOT an hydrocarbon.
