the answer is yes but not recommended.gasoline is much heavier than ethanol.ethanol is used where certain needs of the engine and its use are very different.gasoline in a every day daily driver should only be used for that vehicle using ethanol in a daily will not only cause heavy deposit build up on the valves but cause extreme heat and pressure inside the combustion chambers causing critical stress on the valve train,it can destroy pistons pre-maturellyand inevitably will stress the connecting rods.therefore i would not recommend using ethanol in stock vehicles.high horsepower engines that are designed to withstand above and beyond stock engines well ethanol is good for these engines and should really be used for this purpose.

That ethanol is a "good fuel" is a subjective matter. For instance, it has advantages and disadvantages over typical fossil fuels. Compared to gasoline, ethanol-like most oxygenated solvents-has a much higher upper explosive limit in air (so it burns easier), it burns much cleaner (less pollution), and its feedstocks (including biomass) are more readily available (no underground drilling necessary).

Ethanol is obtained from vegetation, usually the residue of crops like sugar cane, which have traditionally been burnt in the fields. Ethanol and other biofuels and biomass are viable as part of a mix of renewable energy resources, for example, solar, hydro, wind, tidal and geothermal. Ethanol could not replace fossil fuels on its own without destroying forests and taking over land presently used for food crops.

Ethanol is used here in Brazil in nearly pure form (2 to 5% gasoline mixed in it so can not be drunken) for engines and also mixed to 20% in gasoline for car motors that can not burn pure ethanol. Motors here are called Flex, meaning they adjust compression and timing to burn pure gasoline to pure ethanol, and any mixture inbetween.

This is called an eco or green fuel, as it is fermented from mainly sugarcane, distilled several times and sold at gasoline stations as a alternative fuel. Here it is cheaper than gasoline by 30%, cuts gas millage about 10% only, but gives up to 8% more horsepower than pure gasoline. In addition using ethanol, only CO2 and water are the main products after combustion - none of the dangerous gasses that gasoline also creates. Thus besides renewable, it does not cause pollution.

So for a fuel that is renewable, it is a great substitute.

It burns cleaner, however, it produces 1/3 fewer BTU's as gasoline. Meaning, It takes about 1/3 MORE ethanol to go the same distance in your car as gas.
