It is non polar because although it has a carbonyl group that is polar (as the oxygen is more electronegative than the carbon and so forms a dipole), this polarity is outweighed by the hydrophobic nature of the organic part of the compound.

Nonpolar. Upon inspection of the molecular structure there are no electronegative atoms such as Oxygen, which might give the molecule a dipole moment.

Carboxylic Acids are polar therefore benzoic acid is a polar molecule.

What is the solubility of benzoic acid in chloroform?

it is soluble in chloroform. Chloroform is nonpolar.

Is benzoic acid polar covalent or non-polar covalent?

Covalent - Acids don't have metals in them, so they have covalent bonds.

Why can not benzoic acid be dissolved in water at room temperature?

To be soluble a solution must be capable of being dissolved in a solvent, usually water. The HCL cannot ionize into H+ with the COOH ring in the Benzoic acid. Benzoic is hydrophobic in this solution.

Why benzoic acid soluble in ethyl acetate?

dipole-dipole attraction with Ethyl acetate molecules would overcome the H-bond attraction between Benzoic Acid molecules due to ratio of the non-polar to polar portion of the benzoic acid molecules to its polar

polar

Why is the solubility of benzoic acid poor in cold water?

temperature affects the solubility of a substance..benzoic is poor in cold water because it is only slightly soluble in water..in order for it to reach the point of saturation, heat must be applied..heat acts as a catalyst..

What intermolecular force is benzoic acid?

Benzoic acid has an OH group which is polar, so it can form hydrogen bonds.

Acetic acid (CH3COOH) has a polar molecule.

Is pthalic acid polar or nonpolar?

polar since phthalic acid is 1,2-Benzenedicarboxylic acid, two carboxylic acids are on the aromatic ring.
