Yes, exorcism (to expel, remove, or banish an evil or malevolent spirit or demon) is real, and it is practiced by several faiths, not just Christians.

Absolutely, many exorcisms are performed each day.

Roman Catholic answerExorcisms are very, very real. The movies that have been made in the United States in the last forty years, such as The Exorcist were based on real events. The current chief exorcist for the diocese of Rome is Fr. Gabriele Amorth. He has recently had two books translated into English: An Exorcist Tells His Story, and An Exorcist - More Stories. Both books are excellent in telling about exorcisms and why and of what we should know about them. And what we should do in our daily life to combat the evil one, which is no joke, and no laughing matter.

There are two types of exorcisms. Minor and major. Minor exorcisms are performed at every baptism, they are also common with some types of blessings, they can be performed by any priest. Major exorcisms may only be done by a Bishop or by a priest that he has specifically delegated as an exorcist. If you truly believe that you need an exorcist, the wisest move is to contact the Chancery (the Office of the Bishop) in the diocese's main city and inquire as to whether the diocese has an exorcist approved and/or where should you go.

Yes, they do really occur. Pope John Paul II actually conducted an exorcism during his reign as pope. However, the task is usually left to certain trained priests.

Below is a link to one of Fr. Amorth's books, An Exorcist Tells His Story. Fr. Amorth is the chief exorcist of Rome.

Answer:They are real, many have happened. Some exorcisms you see on TV might be fake but there are real ones that have happened. Answer:The word "exorcists" is found in The Bible in only one place. It comes from the greek word "exorkistes" which means "one that binds by an oath (or spell)". The only exorcism mentioned in the Bible failed.

Acts 19:13 (KJV) Then certain of the vagabond Jews, exorcists, took upon them to call over them which had evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth.

Acts 19:14 (KJV) And there were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jew, and chief of the priests, which did so.

Acts 19:15 (KJV) And the evil spirit answered and said, Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are ye?

Acts 19:16 (KJV) And the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, and overcame them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.

Jesus and the apostles cast out devils but the word "excorcists" is never used in reference to them. No one today has the power to cast out demons. The only way that can happen is for a person to receive Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour.

Isaiah 28:15 (KJV) Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with hell are we at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves:

Isaiah 28:16 (KJV) Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.

Isaiah 28:17 (KJV) Judgment also will I lay to the line, and righteousness to the plummet: and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters shall overflow the hiding place.

Isaiah 28:18 (KJV) And your covenant with death shall be disannulled, and your agreement with hell shall not stand; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, then ye shall be trodden down by it.

Catholic AnswerExorcism are very real, the fallen angels (demons) are very real, and they are a very real threat to us and our eternal salvation. For all of her history the Church has performed exorcism on infants and people about to be baptized, and major exorcisms are carried out by a Bishop or a specially authorized priest. For more information on exorcism, what lay people can do to protect themselves, etc. I would recommend Father Gabriel Amorth's books, An Exorcist Tells His Story; and An Exorcist, More Stories. Father Amorth is Rome's chief Exorcist and he has a great deal of experience dealing with the evil one, see the links below.

.

An exorcism is optionally performed before a baptism, this is know as a "lesser exorcism" or of a possessed person by a priest approved by a bishop for the express purpose of freeing that person from demonic possession "major exorcism" and allowing them to lead a normal life.

.

from The Catechism of the Catholic Church, second edition, English translation 1994

1673 When the Church asks publicly and authoritatively in the name of Jesus Christ that a person or object be protected against the power of the Evil One and withdrawn from his dominion, it is called exorcism. Jesus performed exorcisms and from him the Church has received the power and office of exorcizing. (Cf. Mk 1:25-26; 3:15; 6:7, 13; 16:17) In a simple form, exorcism is performed at the celebration of Baptism. The solemn exorcism, called "a major exorcism," can be performed only by a priest and with the permission of the bishop. The priest must proceed with produce, strictly observing the rules established by the church. Exorcism is directed at the expulsion of demons or to the liberation from demonic possession through the spiritual authority which Jesus entrusted to His Church. Illness, especially psychological illness, is a very different matter; treating this is the concern of medical science. Therefore, before an exorcism is performed, it is important to ascertain that one is dealing with the presence of the Evil One, and not an illness. (Cf. Codex Iuris Canonici, canon 1172)

Laypeople (that is people who are not ordained clergy) can perform minor exorcisms, that is private prayer, which is called collectively "deliverance prayers". Let me be very clear about this, the devil is the most intelligent, powerful being that God ever created. Scripture tells us that angels and demons (demons are the fallen angels, including Satan) are spiritual creatures but also individuals gifted with intelligence, will, freedom, and initiative. If Satan were not restrained by God, none of us would be alive. And do not be fooled, even Jesus called him the "prince of this world". The battle the devil wages against people is one of desperation because he knows he is already defeated, "his time is short" (Rev 12:12). As St. Paul tells us "we are not contending against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world rulers of this present darkness, against the spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places" (Eph 6:12).

Jesus gave the power to cast out demons to his apostles; then extended the power to the seventy-two disciples, and in the end he granted it to all those who would believe in him. Fr. Amorth points out in his book that just as it is wrong to deny the existence of Satan, it is also wrong to accept the current popular opinion that there are spiritual beings that are not mentioned in the Bible - these are the invention of spiritualists or followers of the occult. Please be warned, there are no "good spirits" other than angels, there are no evil spirits other than demons. The souls of the dead at seances are none other than demons. The demons, especially Satan, are VERY intelligent, and VERY powerful. Please keep this in mind.

Exorcists receive an additional power above that of the lay people I mentioned at the start, they are authorized by their bishop and using the prayers in the Ritual can administer the sacramental of Exorcism that, unlike private prayer, involves the intercession of the Church, and is carried out by virtue of their ordination to the priesthood.

Much FAITH, much PRAYER, and FASTING are always needed: on the part of both those who intercede and those for whom they intercede. Also please be aware that, although the devil is at the root of all illness - all illness, suffering, sin, death, etc. are consequences of sin, not every illness is directly provoked by the evil one. Prayers of deliverance only work on those directly provoked by Satan. A trained exorcist would be able to diagnose the difference.

As for lay people who are claiming to be exorcists, please be on guard against charlatans and swindlers. The four guidelines recommended by Fr. Amorth are

1) The individual or community lives the Gospel in a profound way.

2) The individual or the community performs absolutely free.

3) The practices used must be common means to obtain grace approved by the Church, avoiding unusual or superstitious actions.

4) The fruits must be good (Mt 12:33).

Please note # 3 above, as those who resort to other means are playing on the wrong side, so to speak, and leaving themselves open to possession themselves.

Given all that, here is a prayer from the Greek Ritual:

Kyrie eleison. God, our Lord, King of ages, All-powerful and All-might, you who made everything and who transform everything simply by your will. You who in Babylon changed into dew the flames of the "seven-times hotter" furnace and protected and saved the three holy children. You are the doctor and physician of our soul. You are the salvation of those who turn to you. We beseech you to make powerless, banish, and drive out every diabolic power, presence, and machination; every evil influence, malefice, or evil eye and all evil actions aimed against your servant . . . where there is envy and malice, give us an abundance of goodness, endurance, victory, and charity. O Lord, you who love man, we beg you to reach out your powerful hands and your most high and mighty arms and come to our aid. Help us, who are made in your image; send the angel of peace over us, to protect us body and soul. May he keep at bay and vanquish every evil power, every poison or malice invoked against us by corrupt and envious people. Then, under the protection of your authority may we sing, in gratitude, "The Lord is my salvation; whom should I fear? I will not fear evil because you are with me, my God, my strength, my powerful Lord, Lord of peace, Father of all ages."

Exorcism and other superstitious activities are not appreciated in Islam. Anyhow, it is practiced by some people who claim to be the Muslims. A Muslim should seek assistance from Almighty Allah in all circumstances.
