Describe the relationship between kinetic energy and gravitational potential energy during the free fall of a pencil from a desk?
As the pencil sits motionlessly on the desk, all of the energy in the system is potential, none is kinetic. As it falls, the potential energy is gradually converted to kinetic; the farther it falls, the more kinetic energy it has and the less potential. But when it hits the floor, the kinetic energy is then converted to sound and heat, leaving it with neither potential nor kinetic energy. *in short, when there's more kinetic energy, there will be lesser gravitational potential energy, when there's more gravitational potential energy, there will be lesser kinetic energy.*

What situation does not involve Potential energy being changed into kinetic energy?
1) Kinetic energy being turned back into potential energy. Look at a child on a swing. As the swing lowers (and they speed up), that's potential to kinetic. As the swing reaches its peak and stops, that kinetic to potential. 2) Burning is chemical energy being turned into heat and light. 3) In the Sun, nuclear fusion releases energy into heat and light.

how on heating a liquid at its boiling point heat energy converted to potential energy?
You are transferring the heat into the water and changing it into steam. Steam has potential energy that can be released by cooling and expansion. This potential energy is released either in heat or can be converted back to kinetic energy by its expansion. This is how power plants work. Some fuel is burned to heat water to steam. Which contains potential energy converted from the heat of the burning fuel. This potential energy releases heat and kinetic energy as it is allowed to expand pushing and driving the turbines that turn the electric generators, and thus the kinetic energy is, by way of the generator converted to electric energy.

Is heat mechanical energy?
Heat is defined as the sum total of the average kinetic energy of the molecules of a body. From the above sentence kinetic energy is one of the two forms of mechanical energy and theother is potential energy. Kinetic energy is enery found in a body by the virtue of its motion. Therefore, if kinetic energy is used to measure heat, heat is mechanical energy.
Is thermal energy kinetic or potential?
Kinetic energy is the energy of motion, KE=mv2/2. Thermal energy is different from kinetic energy. Thermal energy is associated with the temperature of a body, the heat gained by increasing the temperature. That heat gives molecules more kinetic energy and more potential energy and may also give molecules more more electronic energy.
