Homework is good for you because it exercises your mind. When you are in class, the teacher is directing your thinking process (that is, if you're paying attention). When you work on your own, it gives you a chance to direct your thinking in ways that are natural to you. An illustration might be the difference between soldiers marching in order and those same soldiers walking down the street, each in their own style and pace.
Spending a little time on homework also expands your knowledge of a subject. It also helps you learn self-discipline which, I promise you, you'll appreciate sooner or later.
