There has been a prevailing message for a long time that dairy products increase the mucus production and that they should be avoided if you have coughs, flu, colds, etc. More recent studies have shown that there is not really an increase in the amount of mucus produced, but rather that the milk "thickens" the feeling of the mucus and so you notice it more. That makes it so that it can be a little harder to clear your throat of the irritating feeling.
Milk contains protein, carbohydrates, fats and vitamins and other nutrients that are good for you. If you do not like the feeling of the "thicker" mucus, then you may want to avoid milk when you have a cough, cold or the flu. But if you do that, then be sure you are supplementing your diet with other foods rich in nutrients to still be balanced without the dairy products.

∙ 13y agoyes, you have to eat about 37 bowls of ice cream(which is three scoops per bowl) and it could only be Vanilla because the other ones make your cough worse.
