How do Christians use Old Testament sources in ethical decision making?

A:Although they rarely think about the Ten Commandments, most Christians would say they are in some way guided by them in their ethical decision making. Only the last five of the Ten Commandments actually deal with ethics, and only in general terms: do not kill, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not bear false witness against your neighbour, do not covet that which belongs to your neighbour, including his wife or slaves. But we do not need the Ten Commandments to tell us not to kill, steal and so on. And modern Christians would not find much guidance in a Commandment that tells us not to covet our neighbour's slaves. At a practical level, Christians are not guided by the Ten Commandments in their ethical decision making. The remainder of the Old Testament is of little help for ethical decision making. The Book of Joshua tells of genocide on a grand scale, hardly a guide to ethical living in the modern world. I believe that to the extent Christians make ethical decisions, they do so based on conscience not by consciously looking for guidance in the Bible.
