Is it good or bad to use hairspray BEFORE curling your hair with a curling iron and if it is good what are the benefits of using it before?

You should probably use a heat protectant such as Chiinstead of using hairspray first. This will protect your hair from getting dry and damaged. Using hair spray will just cause build up on your hair and it could burn as well. But you can follow up with hairspray to keep the curls in place when your finished.

How to make traditional prom curls?
When I think of a prom curl I think of corkscrew. Which is those curls that is super curly and not just a barrel curl. To get corkscrew curls, separate your hair first into sections. Spray your hair with hairspray, before curling. Take a 3/4 inch curling iron, make sure it is fully heated, and grab about half an inch of hair. On your curling iron, there might be a clip. Lifts the clip up and wrap your hair around the barrel, keep the clip up. After a few seconds take your hair out, by pulling the curling iron up and away from your head. You should have a corkscrew curl! Spray with hairspray and your finished!
How do you clean hairspray off of a curling iron?
Wetting a paper towel with an all purpose cleaning solution and then wiping down the iron should remove most build up. Please make sure the iron off and cooled down before attempting this.

I have naturally straight hair, but it helps to straighten again to make it work easier. A little spritz of hairspray before and after curling doesn't hurt either. Take a flat iron and run down the length of your hair. Right before you get to the bottom, flip your wrist out, slowly but without burning. Rinse and repeat with the rest of your hair :)
