Yes, this is because when you shave the cat they have nothing to warm themselves with but their own body heat. Cats don't produce enough body heat to keep themselves warm causing them to freeze do death.

not harmful, but they don't really like and they look pretty stupid. get a zoom groom brush to take care of shedding fur.
