It is generally not "illegal" however it is generally frowned upon by most employers. You will need to check your benefits handbook and/or employee handbook to see what the employer states. Most employers state that you cannot work for another company while receiving these type of benefits, however most say nothing about seeking work or applying for work. You want to be careful because if you apply for a job, then most prospective employers will contact the employer to gain information about you. You will need to advise your prospective employers to not contact your present employer until you have provided notice.
