No it is not necessary to remove the axle nut in order to remove the front caliper. Once you remove the caliper the rotor should come off.

There is a small black metal piece at the center back of the silver panel top ( this is the one with the cadillac emblem on it ) that hold it at the back center. Hope this is helpful. just a guess because im not positive but may be in center of firewall. that's where they are on 95 and newer. you can do it yourself but its hard to get at.
