I really don't think its older people who are opposed to communities getting along as much as younger people are. Afterall, their usually the ones hanging out in cliques.

Yes the jitterbug is directed towards older people for the large buttons and large screen. While these are directed towards older people i have talked to many people who are younger and have a jitterbug.

In "The Giver," older people are treated with respect and care in the community, but they are also eventually released once they reach a certain age. This release is seen as a way to maintain the sameness and efficiency of the community. Older people are not allowed to grow old and frail like in real life societies.

Generally, for some reason, the children do not want to speak the language of their small community, so the only speakers of the language are the older people. When the older people die, the language dies with them.
