The risk of developing serratia in a healthy adult is very rare, using normal infection control methods should prevent the accidental transmission of this disease in a hospital or home health care setting.

Of course your own health needs to be considered and if you are otherwise immune compromised the risk of developing an infection is higher. If you are pregnant and wary of caring for a patient with an active infection maybe you should consider other work until after the birth of your child.
