Is it safe to eat crab legs when you're pregnant?
Within moderation. Remember, sometimes women can get bad indigestion from rich or spicy foods so take it easy. Enjoy! a pregnant woman can eat seafood but she must be very careful about what seafoods she can eat because a lot of seafood contains mercury, which can be very harmful to the fetus. Bottom-feeder fish are the worst. A pregnant woman should definitely avoid: * swordfish * shark * blowfish * tilefish * king mackerel The following fish should not be eaten because they can contain industrial pollutant in their fatty tissues: * blue fish * stripped bass * salmon * pike * trout * walleye http://pregnancy.about.com/cs/nutritioninpregn/a/aaabavoidfood.htm
If you are shopping for snow crab and find some that have barnacles, black spots or molting on the shell. This does not affect the quality of the crab, these are called "dirty" crab (crabs that have not molted). These snow crabs are usually priced cheaper because of the appearance, but the real bonus is that they are much meatier because they have not molted. They are safe to eat.
I had never been served crab legs with barnacles.... until today. According to our server at Red Lobster they are "harmless" and don't compromise the flavor... which made no difference to me as they looked DISGUSTING and I immediately lost my appetite for crab. It at the very least did not look palatable and I am shocked that they were okay with serving a plate full of these critters! It really gave me the heebie…
