Do not take anything during your pregnancy without first consulting an obgyn. With that said, for pain that cannot be controlled with OTC Tylenol, most obgyns will prescribe Tylenol 3 or sometimes Lortab 5 or 7.5. However, abusing these drugs, as with any drugs, can affect you so I will assume they could affect your baby. Only take them as prescribed.

Yes, you can. It will not deform or harm your baby in any way. Actually the baby won't even feel it. I would never tell anyone this unless it was true, but I know because I am almost eleven weeks pregnant and my OB-GYN diagnosed me with a UTI and prescribed me 20 tablets of Tylenol 3 for the pain and a safe antibiotic for the infection. She also told me that my dentist giving me hydrocodone 7.5's while I am pregnant will not hurt anything either. Trust me, these docs know what they are doing and yes, Tylenol 3 is safe if taken in the correct dosage.

Anything with a narcotic, ie. codeine in this case, should only be taken if your physician prescribes it for you. Some pregnant women need it for headaches, Back pain, etc. and the physician must weigh the decision to prescribe it or have the woman in pain, which isn't good for the developing baby either. The only problem with narcotics of course is addiction and sometimes constipation. Ob physicians are aware of your gestational age and where the fetus is in its development. They will tell you how many to take and for how long. As an L&D nurse for years, remember we give pain medications such as demerol to women in labor after consideration of whether the medication will be "on board" at the time of delivery. These infants do well. Everything in moderation and only when necessary is a good thing to remember. Sometimes it is better to have a relaxed and less stressed mom to be than one that is hurting and stressed out. Undue stress is not good for the baby and might even put the mom into premature labor.
