Are you sure you're thinking of the C96? The C96 is the "broomhandle" Mauser pistol, and the projectile itself may travel out to 1,000 metres under the right circumstances, but the effective range is considerably less - around 50 - 75 metres. The only other Mauser rifle with a "96" nomenclature was the Swedish M/96 long rifle. That is a rifle capable of reaching out and touching something at 1000 metres - if the firer is able to place the shot. A more realistic effective range - particularly for a rifle using only iron sights - would be 600 - 800 metres.

The Mauser C96 is not a carbine - it's a pistol. Furthermore, the reason modern intermediate cartridge assault rifles were created stems largely from German research of their battles in the First World War, which found that most firefights occurred at ranges of less than 200 metres. And just because the sights adjust to 1000 metres, doesn't mean you'll actually hit a target at that range - most snipers won't even engage at such a distance, and a typical line soldier probably wouldn't be able to see the enemy at such a distance.
Depending on the rifle, 1000 meters +.
The US Army defines the maximum effective range of a .308 as 800 meters. The US Marine Corps defines the effective range as 1000 meters. There will be variances due to things like bullet weight, barrel length, etc. Generally speaking, bullets are no longer effective once they become subsonic, which happens at around 1000 meters with a .308.
The maximum effective range of a point target on the M249 is 800 meters. The maximum effective range of an area target is 1000 meters. The maximum range is about 3600 meters.
That depends on which maximum range you want to know. The maximum range if you could shoot a bullet and it would not hit anything until it ran out of energy is 3600 meters (MAX Range). The maximum "effective" range for shooting at an individual or specific point is 500 meters (Point Target) or 600 meters at an area or group without hitting a specific target (Area Target ).
